Running Movement Analysis Workshops
Getting faster usually means training harder. More miles, more sessions, more intensity. That works until it stops working, and for a lot of runners it stops working somewhere around the point where the extra load starts producing niggles instead of progress.
There's a second lever, and most runners never touch it. How you move decides how much of your effort turns into forward motion and how much gets absorbed, wasted or fought against. Two runners with identical fitness can be a long way apart on the same course, because one is spending energy on movement that goes nowhere.
Part of this is about a system that rarely gets trained deliberately. Fascia is the connective tissue running through your whole body, linking everything together. Load it correctly and it stores energy and returns it. What comes back costs you nothing, because elastic return needs no oxygen, burns no calories and produces no lactate. Runners who look effortless are generally the ones getting a lot of it back.
The gains here compound with distance. Over 5k, inefficiency is survivable. Over a marathon it becomes expensive, and over an ultra it decides your day, because form degrades as you tire and the cost of every wasted stride gets charged to you thousands of times over. This is also why efficiency tends to matter most to the runners who've been at it longest and are most convinced they've plateaued.
The good news is that movement responds to training in a way that some other limiters don't. Fascia regenerates on roughly a seven month cycle, so how you move over the coming months genuinely shapes what your body becomes. Age is much less of an obstacle than most people expect.
What this workshop does is teach you to see and feel your own movement, so you can find those gains yourself rather than needing someone standing beside you.
What is running movement analysis?
It's not about forcing you into a "correct" running style. What we're looking to achieve is identifying where your movement is costing you energy, where you're asymmetrical left to right, and what small changes would give you the biggest return.
The approach used at Run Smile Inspire draws on the natural movement and elasticity work of Shane Benzie — the principle that the body moves as a connected elastic system rather than a set of mechanical levers. Rather than drilling isolated body parts, we look at posture, height, leg cycle and ground contact as one linked chain.
Why we do this outdoors and never on a treadmill
This is the biggest practical difference between a session with me and most gait analysis you'll be offered.
On a treadmill the belt does the moving. You're lifting your feet and putting them down while the ground travels underneath you. Outdoors you're driving yourself over ground that stays where it is. Those are two different movements, and the second one is the one you actually do in races.
Everything we're interested in changes on a belt. Your ground contact, your propulsion, how far you travel per stride, the way your foot loads and releases. Shane's own research moved outdoors for exactly this reason, and it's why his findings came from trails and Kenyan dirt roads rather than a laboratory.
How this differs from gait analysis in a running shop
Shop analysis exists to sell you the right shoe. It's usually a short treadmill jog, filmed from behind, focused on your ankle and foot. It's a reasonable way to choose footwear and it isn't designed to be anything more.
This is a coaching session about your whole body. We look at posture, arms, leg cycle and ground contact as one connected system, because in an elastic model they aren't separable. You run over real ground at your own pace. And you leave able to assess yourself, rather than holding a printout of someone else's conclusions.
What's worth investing in is how you move, and that costs nothing to keep.

Workshop options and pricing
One-to-one session — £200
A 2 hour individual assessment at a location convenient to you.
Running club workshop — Enquire for Cost
I come to your club night or weekend session. Half a day, small groups, everyone filmed and reviewed individually.
Private group full day workshop — Enquire for Cost
Got a handful of running friends? Pick a venue that works for you and I'll come to you.
I'm based in Scotland and travel throughout. No travel charge within 30 miles; beyond that I'll quote transparently before you commit. For groups further afield, splitting travel across the group usually makes it very workable.
Where I run workshops
I'm mobile, so the workshop happens where it suits you. Regular travel across:
Scotland — Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk, West Lothian, Fife, Perth, the Borders, Highlands and Islands
Northern England — Newcastle, Carlisle, the Lake District, Yorkshire
Further afield — happy to travel UK-wide for club bookings and group sessions
All I need is a stretch of ground to run on and somewhere reasonably sheltered to review footage. A park, a track, a trail car park, a club hall — it all works.
Not on the list? Ask anyway! I move around a lot and I may already be heading your way.
